10 Tips for Passing Your CSCS Test

10 Tips for Passing Your CSCS Test post image

Want to kick start your career in construction? Then a CSCS Green Labourers Card is one of the most important certifications to consider. We explain why you need a CSCS Card and how to pass CSCS Test questions with flying colours.

The CSCS Card has now become a standard requirement for entry-level jobs, and the CSCS Test (also known as the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test) is made up of 50 multiple-choice questions. It’s not an easy test by any means so if you’re looking for CSCS Test advice, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are our top 10 tips for passing CSCS Test questions the first time round!

1) Allow plenty of revision time

Our first tip for anyone looking to break into the construction industry is to revise for the CSCS exam. While some people believe this to be a common sense test, the reality is different and having a deeper understanding of health and safety is vital.

The 50 questions are as follows:

  • 38 Health & Safety knowledge-based questions
  • 12 behavioural case study questions

In order to pass, you will need to get 45 out of the 50 questions right. This doesn’t leave a lot of room for error. So if you want to know how to pass a CSCS Test first-time, it really is important to revise as much as possible.

2) Have a mock test

Mock exams are essential when preparing for your real test because the questions have to be answered under a time limit. The time you have to complete the CSCS Test is 45 minutes, so practise doing mock exams with a timer.

3) Use revision cards

Revision cards or flashcards are a useful tool for students looking to improve their revision strategy. Use visual cues and concise information to enhance memory retention. If you’re a visual learner, use colour and drawings/charts/diagrams. If you’re a textual learner, adopt bullet points for key information.

4) Study in short bursts

Do you struggle with concentrating for long periods of time? You’re not alone. Many students actually find studying in short 20-30 minute bursts much more effective for learning. Doing this can prevent burnout, helping you retain information faster.

5) Create a study schedule

If you feel overwhelmed with the amount of revision required, or you have certain time restrictions, a schedule can help you stay on track. It can be useful breaking down the Health & Safety revision into relevant sections, such as:

  • H&S legislation
  • Hazard identification
  • Risk assessment and control
  • Manual handling
  • Working at height
  • Fire safety
  • Electrical safety
  • Construction site hazards

6) Source CSCS study materials

Understanding what potential exam questions may come up is one of the most effective ways to prepare for your test. If you want to know how to pass CSCS Test questions easily, try looking at existing study materials that are either available to buy, or download for free. There are some great revision study books out there that can be read in your own time if you prefer a paced learning style.

We highly recommend the CSCS Revision App – though it does cost £6.99 to purchase. However, the official CITB version is definitely worth it as it features questions from the bank of questions you may get on the day of your test. Using the app you can complete full mock tests, practice specific categories and check the correct answers to questions you didn’t get right the first time.

7) Use the process of elimination

This is great CSCS Test advice for beginners. While it may seem like common sense, many forget to practise this when under exam pressures. For each question, eliminate answers that are the least probable first. This will narrow down the selection to make it easier for you to answer.

8) Check the CITB website

Familiarise yourself with the CITB website and check it for useful news, articles or blogs which may be helpful in understanding more about the construction industry and Health & Safety regulations. For instance, CITB’s Setting Out video covers key information for three different tests. For visual learners, video content is a fantastic way to study.

9) Learn with others

Studying with a friend or someone who is willing to help you with revision can be beneficial for recall and memory. Plus, if you find it hard to stay motivated while juggling other responsibilities (such as family life or another job perhaps), having someone to spur you on can make all the difference.

10) Choose the right course

One of the best tips for passing a CSCS Test is getting on the right course. An intensive one-day programme means you can get the support you need to study to the best of your abilities.
